Professional Development

At Melrose Area Public School, we are committed to fostering a culture of continuous growth and learning for our educators. High-quality professional development (PD) is essential to ensuring that teachers and staff have the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to provide the best possible education for our students. Our PD opportunities are designed to be collaborative, data-driven, and aligned with research-based best practices, supporting instructional excellence and student achievement.

Through workshops, coaching, peer collaboration, and ongoing training, we focus on key areas such as curriculum implementation, instructional strategies, assessment practices, differentiated learning, and student engagement. Whether through district-led initiatives, state-mandated training, or personalized learning opportunities, we strive to empower our educators with the tools they need to grow professionally and enhance student learning.

This page provides information on upcoming PD sessions, resources, and professional learning opportunities available to our staff. For more information, please contact Evan Reller, ereller@isd740.org.

Elementary

This year, our elementary teachers have focused on deepening their understanding of literacy, strengthening math instruction, and using data to drive student growth through the following key professional development initiatives:

📖 LETRS Training – Science of Reading
Our elementary teachers continue their LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) training, a comprehensive, research-based approach to the Science of Reading. This training helps teachers strengthen foundational literacy instruction, ensuring that students develop strong phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.

Math in Focus Curriculum Implementation
With the adoption of Math in Focus, our teachers have been engaged in ongoing collaboration and training to effectively implement this new curriculum. Professional learning sessions focus on Singapore Math strategies, problem-solving approaches, and hands-on instructional techniques that help students develop a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics.

📊 Data Coaching with Core5
To ensure that instruction meets the needs of all learners, teachers participate in data coaching sessions focused on analyzing Core5 Lexia data. These sessions provide valuable insights into student progress, instructional needs, and targeted interventions, helping educators make informed decisions that support literacy development.

Through these professional development initiatives, our elementary teachers are continually refining their instructional practices to create highly engaging, data-driven, and student-centered learning experiences.

Secondary

This year, our secondary teachers have engaged in targeted training and collaboration focused on enhancing classroom instruction, supporting diverse learners, and using data to drive decision-making.

🧘 De-escalation Strategies
Teachers received training in de-escalation techniques, equipping them with strategies to effectively manage challenging behaviors, create positive classroom environments, and foster student well-being. These skills support a safe and respectful learning space where all students can thrive.

🗣 Supporting English Learners (ELs)
Educators participated in professional development focused on supporting English Learners (ELs) by implementing instructional scaffolds, language development strategies, and culturally responsive teaching practices to ensure EL students receive the support they need to succeed academically.

📊 Data Retreats & MCA Analysis
Teachers engaged in data retreats, where they analyzed MCA assessment data to identify trends, strengths, and areas for growth. These sessions provided a deeper understanding of student performance and instructional gaps, allowing for data-driven decisions in curriculum planning and intervention strategies.

🤝 Collaboration Within Departments
Departmental collaboration was a key focus, providing teachers with structured time to work within their content areas to align curriculum, share best practices, and develop strategies to enhance student engagement and achievement. This time fosters a collaborative professional learning community that strengthens instructional consistency and innovation.

Through these professional development opportunities, our secondary educators are building their capacity to support diverse learners, refine instructional practices, and use data to enhance student learning outcomes.

Paraprofessionals

To strengthen their instructional skills and effectiveness, our paraprofessionals participated in targeted professional development focused on reading, writing, mathematics, and best practices for student support.

📚 ParaEducator Training Modules
Paraprofessionals worked through structured ParaEducator training modules designed to enhance their ability to support students in literacy, writing, and mathematics. These modules provided research-based strategies to assist students with academic tasks, skill-building, and classroom engagement.

🎯 Customized Professional Learning
Recognizing that paraprofessionals work in a variety of educational settings, they were also given the opportunity to select additional training tailored to their specific roles and assignments. This individualized approach allowed them to focus on areas most relevant to their day-to-day responsibilities and the needs of the students they support.

Through these professional learning opportunities, our paraprofessionals continue to grow in their ability to effectively assist students, reinforce instruction, and contribute to a positive and inclusive learning environment.
