On May 18th, 2022, School Resource Officer, Deputy Tyler Johnson was dispatched to a vehicle crash with injuries in the city of Freeport. This is a pretty standard call for most deputies and officers, however, on this day, Melrose High School Junior Fernando Estrella was riding along with SRO Johnson for a job shadow. Upon arrival at the scene, SRO Johnson learned that some of the people involved spoke only Spanish. SRO Johnson requested the assistance of Estrella who is fluent in Spanish. Estrella was able to assist not only SRO Johnson, but also Melrose Ambulance and Freeport Fire and Rescue in the investigation of the crash. As a result, SRO Johnson awarded Estrella with a certificate of recognition for his actions and assistance during this incident.
